Who Are Gray Panthers?
We are older and younger people.   We are an intergenerational,  non-profit peace and social justice organization with members in Southeast Michigan, including Detroit and the Counties of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb.  We work on issues which affect people of all ages: universal health care, peace, strengthening Social Security and Medicare, challenging descrimination, education reform, economic justice, fair labor practices and campaign finance reform.  Join us!

BACKGROUND

President Trump's proposed FY 2019 budget includes:  cutting Medicare by $266 billion, cutting Medicaid by $1.1 trillion, and cutting Social Security by $72 billion. In addition, under the guise of "reforming disability entitlements", the Trump plan  includes making explicit cuts to Social Security by cutting Supplemental Security Income  (SSI) for low income persons and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for persons with disabilities.  This adds up to over $1.4 trillion.

The Republican Congress voted for a $1.5 tax cut package in  December 2017. Over 80% of these tax cuts ($1.2 trillion) will go to the top 1% by 2027, according the Center for Tax Fairness. This constitutes a massive redistribution of wealth from the  elderly, the sick, the poor and people with disabilities to corporations and to very wealthy families!
