Teachers Need More than Apples: Our Underpaid Educators

As the school year is approaching, we wanted to highlight the teacher shortage. While there is no doubt that there are less teachers in the workforce, the media often makes it seem as if teachers just don't want to work, aren't good at budgeting their salaries, or don't deserve more pay because they get the summer "off". However, we want to turn the blame from teachers “not wanting to work,” to “teachers are severely underpaid and dealing with numerous other challenges.” We will discuss WHY that shortage exists. The teacher pay gap and our current economy has made it hard to have a career in teaching and to stay financially afloat. Addtionally, many teachers have said that there are numerous aspects of their job that no longer make it worth it such as unruly and rude students, aggressive parents, lack of administrative support, underfunding for classrooms, too many students per class, and of course the pay. Many teachers must pick up second or even thirds jobs, and pick up jobs during the summer time in order to maintain a living wage in the U.S. Read the newsletter to learn more about the teacher shortage, how we got to the point of our teachers being severely underpaid, and what can be done to help support them.
